PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – La Salle Women’s Basketball Head Coach MacGillivray Mountain announced the addition of four Explorers to the 2023 Signature Class.
Aryss Macktoon, Hailey Chiles, Amber Bullard and Nicole Melious will all wear Blue & Gold next year.
“We’re so excited about this class. We’ve been able to add size and speed as well as some serious firepower,” MacGillivray said. “Our La Salle community will really enjoy getting to know these four dynamic personalities.”
Macktoon comes to Philadelphia from Catonsville, Maryland, where she attends St. Timothy High School. The 5-10 guard has been conference All-B throughout her four years playing. She is a multi-year MVP and received a character piece from Coach Mont de Sales last season.
“I chose La Salle because it’s like a second home to me,” Macktoon said. “The campus is very beautiful and not far from the city, so the location is perfect. I like how everyone is very authentic. It makes me feel comfortable. I can’t wait to start my next four years as an explorer.”
“Athletically, Aryss is just different from anyone on our roster. She has the ability to wipe out an elite scorer,” MacGillivray said. “Aryss has a great work ethic and it’s very difficult for opposing defenders to stay in front.”
Chiles hails from North Greenwood, South Carolina where she plays at Greenwood High School. The 6-3 center is a two-time All-Region winner and has earned All-State recognition. The future freshman is a member of the Beta Club and received the Silver Academic award. Chiles are averaging 17.5 points per game, 11.9 rebounds per game and 3.7 blocks per game.
“The reason I chose La Salle was because it really felt like home and the coaches were very down to earth,” Chiles said. “I am ready to be part of my new La Salle family.”
“Hailey has the size and strength that really impacts our ability to dominate in the paint,” MacGillivray said. “She has a commanding power play around the rim and a soft, smooth feel beyond the arc.”
Bullard, a native of Philadelphia, joins the crew at age 20e & Olney of the Christian Academy. The 6-2 center was named the 2021-22 academy player of the year. During her junior season, she averaged 15.6 points per game and scored a total of 296 points.
“La Salle was my pick because it had the ultimate DEAL – Diversity, Everything I was looking for, Awesome Vibe and Love for the game,” Bullard said.
“Amber will immediately bring to the team what they lost when Shalina Miller graduated,” MacGillivray said. “She has an instinct to protect the rim. Amber has skills you can’t teach as a coach. She’s got big hands, a massive size, she runs the floor and can finish around the rim. “
Melious arrives in the City of Brotherly Love from Staten Island, New York, where she played Susan E Wagner High School. The 5-8 guard scored 2,003 goals in two seasons and was named New York Player of the Year. The two-time Warren Jaques award winner was also dubbed the New York Martin Luther King Jr. High School Classic’s all-time leading scorer. She ranks second in the nation in scoring and her 1,046 points in a single season set the NYS record. To date, she is Staten Island’s third all-time leading scorer and New York’s fourth all-time scorer. She was named Player of the Game at Barclays Center in the NYC AA Championship.
“I chose La Salle because being able to play closer to home and having my friends and family come to the games is something extremely important to me,” Melious said.
“Nicole will be the most prolific scorer ever signed by La Salle women’s basketball,” MacGillivray said. “Nicole is on course to score over 3,000 points in just over three high school seasons. La Salle fans will love watching Nicole play. She’s got the Staten Island swagger and the skills to back it up.”
