Nick Turowski of Penn-Trafford will make the WPIAL semi-finals on Monday.

The WPIAL Individual Golf Playoffs conclude with the Class AAA Semifinals as Class AA players prepare to play for the WPIAL Championships.

The boys’ class AAA semifinals will be held Monday at the Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.

Qualifiers from the Westmoreland area include Nick Turowski and Chase Crissman of Penn-Trafford; Owen Miele of Latrobe; Austin Corona of Hempfield; Tyler Mocello, Patrick Bush and Rogan Maloney of Belle Vernon; Zach Abdallah, Nolan Shilling and Jeff Anderchak of Franklin Regional; and Cambell Curry from the Kiski region.

The Class AA Boys’ Championship takes place Thursday at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley.

Among the peloton will be Hunter Jurica from Derry, Antonio Hauser and Ashton Beighly and Wade Boyle from Greensburg Central Catholic.

Jurica and Boyle were co-medalists in Section 2.

On the girls’ side, Meghan Zambruno of Greensburg Central Catholic defended her Section 1-2A title to advance to the WPIAL final on October 7 at Hannastown Golf Club. She will be joined by her teammates Ella Zambruno, Izzy Aigner and Liv Kana.

The Zambruno twins have qualified for the WPIAL final four years in a row.

football playoffs

WPIAL will use a format similar to the one it implemented last fall for the football playoffs, said league executive director Amy Scheuneman. The higher seeds will play home matches for the first and second rounds, “provided the school facilities meet the minimum requirements to host the competition”, which refers to turf, seating etc. .

Neutral venues will be considered for the semi-finals, with the championships scheduled to return to Highmark Stadium in Station Square in Pittsburgh on November 5-6.

Hempfield Softball Coach

Hempfield began the interview process last week to replace longtime softball coach Bob Kalp.

Surprisingly, the Spartans’ program has not had a vacant head coach position since 1997, when Kalp took over.

Kalp, 76, guided the Spartans to seven WPIAL championships and four PIAA titles and notched 431 victories.

“Several” candidates are under consideration and the district may have a candidate ready to vote at its October meeting, unless an out of schedule meeting is arranged in the meantime.
