The Day – Senator Somers honored for advocacy for senior housing and health care
On September 10, Senator Heather Somers was named the recipient of the “Fairview Medal”. Fairview, based in Groton, is the region’s only nonprofit skilled nursing facility and independent living community.
The Fairview Medal is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Fairview over a long period of time.
“To receive this medal is quite an honor, and I am grateful to everyone at Fairview for this recognition,” said Senator Somers. “Fairview has been committed to providing exceptional care since opening its doors over 125 years ago. Fairview does a wonderful job providing housing and health care for seniors. I do my best to be a strong voice for seniors and quality health care in our State Capitol, and I view Fairview as a strong partner in this work in progress. “
Senator Somers is a senior member of the Legislature’s Public Health Committee, which has knowledge of all programs and matters relating to the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
In 2019, Senator Somers was named “Champion of Elder Care” by the Connecticut Association of Health Care Facilities / Connecticut Center for Assisted Living
Somers has served on the state’s COVID vaccine advisory committee and as chair of the vaccine communications subcommittee.
She represents Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Plainfield, Preston, Sterling, Stonington and Voluntown.
