HOLLADAY – St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Holladay recently renamed its Religious Education Center in honor of Father John Norman, who served as pastor from 2012 until August 3 this year, when he retired .
The Rev. John E. Norman Faith Formation Center is an annex that was added to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in the 1980s to provide classrooms and offices for religious instruction.
With this action, the parish advisory board honored Fr. Norman’s long history of service in education, said Ildiko Haycock, parish office manager and member of the advisory board.
Prof. Norman taught at Judge Memorial and Juan Diego Catholic Secondary Schools for several years. He was also director of the Saint Joseph CHS for nine years and president of the Judge Memorial for seven years.
Additionally, Fr. Norman was an educator during the time of St. Vincent’s, Haycock said. “We just watched everything father. Norman had done here in the parish. All his Sunday masses were always filled with teaching, all his homilies, our daily masses, the time he spent at school with the children. He was always looking for ways to bring retreats and deepen the teaching in our parish. We thought it was the perfect building to bear his name. The advisory board said, “Absolutely. We are doing this for Fr. Normand.'”
Prof. Norman was very involved in the advisory board and the members got to know him very well, Haycock said.
The Advisory Board informed Fr. Norman of their intention to rename the building in his honor at his July 15 retirement party. At that time, they gave him a model of the sign that would be placed on the building.
“What an incredible thing; it was a big surprise,” the father said. Norman says of honor. “I think it is the greatest compliment possible, to be recognized for being dedicated to education and teaching when I have spent much of my time as a priest doing so. C t is something very beautiful that has happened.”
Prof. Norman blessed and dedicated the building after Sunday Masses July 31st. Upon retirement, he moved to Las Cruces, NM
