More than 200 outbreaks of the coronavirus have been reported in schools in Illinois, several involving more than a dozen cases in educational institutions, according to statewide data.

The latest figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health show 206 outbreaks are active in Illinois schools as of Friday, including 26 in Cook County alone.

In Will County, the Joliet West High School-reported outbreak of more than five positive cases prompted authorities to cancel a football game on Friday, as well as the return-from-school game.

The following schools in Illinois are reporting outbreaks of more than 16 cases: East Side High School in St. Clair County, Bunker Hill Schools and Staunton Community USD # 6 in Macoupin County, Carlyle School in Clinton County , Okawville Grade School in Washington County and Field School in Cook County.

Although some schools offer their own case tracking tools, IDPH publishes data weekly showing COVID outbreaks of the past 30 days in schools across the state.

According to the Department of Health, information about the outbreak is reported once an investigation is considered complete. An outbreak is defined as “those who have been identified by the local health department as having two or more cases of COVID-19 which may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households”.

Here is a complete list of school outbreaks reported by state officials.
