Thirty-two minutes weren’t enough for Our Redeemer’s Christian School (ORCS) and Des Lacs – Burlington (DLB) in District 12’s third-place playoff game Monday night at Minot Auditorium.

The two teams faced off for 36 minutes, and two free throws with four seconds left in overtime by senior ORCS phenom Zach Hendrickson gave the Knights a 75-73 win over DLB.

“Zach Hendrickson is a senior. He’s gonna give it all he’s got” said ORCS head coach Brock Teets. “When you have a horse in the race, sometimes you just let it run.”

The Lakers led by eight points, 64-56, at the end of the fourth quarter. Hendrickson put his team on their backs and buried a step back three with three seconds left to send the game into overtime, 69-69.

The teams went scoreless for the first minute of overtime before the Lakers scored four unanswered runs. A foul on the Laker’s Rylan Olson sent the junior to the line. Olson hit one of the two, giving the Lakers a 70-69 lead. Seconds later, the Lakers Braylon Fisher was fouled and sent to the line for two shots. Fisher hit the second of his two free throws to put DLB up 71-69. A bucket from Ty Hughes put the Lakers up 73-69.

The Knights responded by getting a bucket from Jace Weekly to shoot in the two, and Hendrickson tied the game at 73–73. A Lakers turnover with 12.7 seconds on the clock gave the Knights one last hope. Hendrickson sealed the win, hitting two free throws with 4.6 seconds left, 75-73, finishing with 37 points. A Lakers last-ditch half-court hit at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim and off the floor, giving the Knights the wild 75-73 win.

“Des Lacs – Burlington is the top six seed in the state,” Teets said. “They are big, fast and athletic.”

The Lakers had plenty of chances late in the game to ice the Knights from the free throw line. DLB finished the game 12-22 from the free throw line.

With the win, Hendrickson and the Lakers will continue in Region 6, facing District 11 runner-up Bottineau at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Hendrickson was named District 12 Outstanding Senior, and to the All-District Team and at the end of the tournament. Coltan Francis and Kyle Drovdal each added 10 points for the Knights.

He was joined on the All-District team by Des Lacs – Burlingtons Rylan Olson. Olson led the Lakers with 23 points. Freshman Jacob Schaefer added 22 points and Sophomore Braylon Fisher scored 14 for the Lakers.
