Each week, area high school coaches are invited to submit a list of notable performers on their team from the previous week’s games. If your child’s name – or someone on their team – does not appear on the list, please encourage your coach to email their submissions to [email protected] by noon every Sunday.
Here are the nominees for Athlete of the Week.
Cameron Arne, Cape Fear Academy Men’s Soccer: Arne had a strong opening week for the Hurricanes, scoring three goals and distributing an assist as Cape Fear Academy beat Wayne Country Day 4-2, then knocked down Topsail 2-1.
Eliza Fogleman, Topsail Girls Golf: Fogleman scored a 38 in the Mideast Conference season opener on Monday, which gave the honors to the senior co-medalist at Carolina National.
Jacob Johnson, Laney football: Johnson scored two touchdowns and covered 143 yards in just 11 carries on Friday as the Buccaneers started 1-0 for the first time since 2013 with a 34-24 victory over DH Conley.
Lauren Longbottom, Wilmington Christian Academy volleyball: The Patriots senior passer did a bit of everything in a 3-1 win over Southeastern HomeSchool on Tuesday. Longbottom had 22 assists, 10 digs, eight aces and two kills.
Here are other notable performers from the previous high school sports week.
Sam Williams, Hoggard: Williams shone on First Friday of the football season, rushing for 150 yards and two touchdowns in 18 carries as the Vikings beat Northside 28-0.
Shelton Bocook, South Brunswick: Bocook had 13 tackles, including two for losses, as South Brunswick earned a 15-0 win over Richlands to open the season.
Lydia Pate, Coastal Christian: The UNC-Asheville engagement recorded 17 kills, 12 blocks, two aces and three digs this week as the Centurions went 2-0 with sweeps over Topsail and Cary Christian.
Carolina Bariglio, Cape Fear Academy: The second-year outside hitter had 10 kills and 10 digs on Thursday as the Hurricanes beat South Brunswick 3-1 to start their season.
Brooke Osterhaudt, Laney: Osterhaudt propelled Laney to a 3-1 victory over South View on Tuesday with 13 kills, 10 digs, five aces and one block.
Savannah Cook, Ashley: Cook was formidable in a 3-2 season opener loss to Pinecrest, contributing 12 assists, 11 assists, 18 digs and nine blocks.
Alia Jones, topsail: Jones had 56 digs, 13 points and 18 assists as the Pirates started their season with a 1-2 week, including a 3-1 win over Trask on Monday.
Aidan Payne, New Hanover: Payne once again announced himself as the region’s top scorer, finding the back of the net seven times as the Wildcats claimed victories over Croatan and New Bern in opening week.
Tyler Kroma, topsail: Despite a 2-1 loss to Cape Fear Academy, Kroma opened their season with a stunning half-volley goal from a corner on Thursday.
Alexis Chavez, West of Brunswick: Chavez scored one goal and won three challenges Thursday in the Trojans’ 4-1 loss to Dixon.
Taylor Garriott, Cape Fear Academy: The eighth-grader won his two singles games and all of his doubles games this week in third place as the Hurricanes went 2-0 with impressive wins over Hoggard and Cary Christian.
