Ervin Hanus died Monday, June 6, 2022 at Sunrise Hill Care Center at the age of 89, from cancer. Ervin Joseph Hanus was born September 13, 1932 at Century Farm south of Traer, the son of Albin Frank and Mary Ella (Dvorak) Hanus. He attended field school until eighth grade, then graduated from high school in Traer in 1950. Ervin worked with his father until he joined the army in 1953. He served two years during the Korean conflict. Basic training was at Camp Polk, LA, training at Ft. Belvoir, VA and trained at Ft. Riley, KS with headquarters and service from the 41st Engineer BN, 50th Infantry Division. Ervin was separated in April 1955 as a corporal and placed in the Army Reserve to complete eight years under the Universal Military Training and Service Act. While on leave, he married Irene Mae Mareska on January 5, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. Ervin was a carpenter until his parents retired, then moved to the farm, where he farmed for 17 years, retiring in August 1979. Ervin then began working as a clerk at the Cedar Falls Liquor Store owned by the state. He worked at the Marshalltown Veterans Home with residents for five years. He was a member of the American Legion Kubik-Finch Post 142 since 1955, AmVet Post 49, Cedar Falls, St. Paul Catholic Church, Traer, and Clutier’s KD Lodge Branch 130.
He is predeceased by one brother, Edward Hanus; an infant brother, Milo Hanus and a sister, Mildred Bohnstengel.
Ervin is survived by his wife, Irene, of Traer; his five children: Vicki Linn (William D.) Mitchell, of Cape Fair, MO, Kenneth Frank (Paula) Hanus, of Clear Lake, Duane Ervin (Vicky) Hanus, of Traer, Steven William (Barbara) Hanus, of Traer, and Ronald Roy (Keri) Hanus, of Solon; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
